Notes & News:
06/24/08 - AVG Free 8.0 is now available as freeware for personal use. Also newsworthy, AVG Free 7.5 updates have been extended through 2008 which takes the pressure off upgrading immediately. AVG Free 8.0 offers broader protection than 7.5-Free which only supported antivirus and email scanning. 8.0-Free adds antispyware, antirootkit and protection from malicious websites. I am running AVG 8.0-Free successfully on both Vista and XP Professional. It slows down the computer a bit, but I expect that to improve over the next few weeks as program updates are released. If you upgrade to 8.0-Free, you don't need to uninstall 7.5 first -- it will take care of that for you. If you stay on 7.5-Free a while longer, don't forget to run an antispyware product such as AdAware 2008 regularly (at least once a week).
Client note: most of my clients are running paid versions of either AVG AntiMalware or Trend Micro SMB. Both of these products offer full time protection against virus and spyware. I won't be rushing to upgrade them to AVG 8.0 until the performance improves a bit.
